What is Emergency Hormonal Contraception?
Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) is a contraceptive that is available to you if you have had sex without using any contraception (unprotected sex), or if you are worried that your contraception may have failed.
EHC is also commonly known by the general public as the 'morning after pill', although this can cause women to mistakenly think that it can only be taken the morning after having unprotected sex.
EHC can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex, but the sooner you take it, the more effective it is.
Where can I get EHC.and how much does it cost?
You can get ECH free from the following:
- Any GP who provides contraceptive services
- Any family planning clinic
- Any young person's clinic
- Most sexual health clinics
- Most Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinics
- Some hospital Accident and Emergency Departments (phone first)
- Some Newport Pharmacies
- Some Newport Pharmacies also have specially trained pharmacists who provide a new FREE confidential service.see the list of Pharmacies taking part in the scheme.
Important! Please phone the pharmacy before arriving. This is a new scheme, therefore not all Pharmacists have been trained to take part in the service, and those who are can cover several pharmacies. If an EHC trained Pharmacist is not on the premises, you will be advised of which pharmacy they are working from that day.
Also! Please note that that the list of Pharmacies may change, but every effort will be made to keep the list updated.
